VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition

The Voice of Democracy Program is open to students in grades 9-12 (on the Nov. 1 deadline), who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States and its territories.


The entry form for the upcoming 2016-17 contest will be available in early March 2016.

The 2016-17 theme is: My Responsibility to America 

Students should record their reading of the draft to an audio CD or flash drive. The recording can be no shorter than three minutes and no longer than five minutes (plus or minus five seconds).

Entries begin at the Post level. Once the student creates their essay and completes burning the audio version to an audio CD/flash drive, they can submit their typed version, CD/flash drive and the Voice of Democracy entry form to their local participating VFW Post by the November 1 deadline.  

Originality is worth 30 points: Treatment of the theme should show imagination and human interest. 

Content is worth 35 points: Clearly express your ideas in an organized manner. Fully develop your theme and use transitions to move smoothly from one idea to the other.

Delivery is worth 35 points: Speak in a clear and credible manner.

The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a one-time competitive award for exceptional high school senior women in the amount of $2,500.



  • Candidate is in her senior year of is 20 years of age or under by November 30th
  • Candidate is a citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Candidate plans to attend an accredited post-secondary educational institution in the U.S. or Canada, full-time or part-time
  • Candidate will attend in the fall of the academic year following high school graduation
  • Candidate is recommended by a P.E.O. chapter

AES Engineers Scholarship

Purpose of Scholarships
AES Engineering is pleased to be able to continue offering scholarships to motivated students to help in the furthering of their education.

Scholarship Criteria
Our belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason we are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by an evaluation of the essays that are submitted.

Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility.

You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.

How to Apply
Students must submit an essay of between 500 and 1000 words in answer to the following question:

When you look back on your life in 30 years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful?  What relationships or accomplishments will be important on this journey? 

Amount of award: $500.00

Woodie & Mable Best Scholarship

This scholarship is due March 1st.  It is $1000.  Applicants must apply through OSAC.  Harney County seniors with a 3.0 gpa or better, and undergraduates with a 2.75 gpa or better are eligible.  Applicant must have graduated from Harney County high school.


This scholarship is on the Harney County Dollars for Scholars list.

Every year, the Wendy’s High School Heisman Program and The Heisman Memorial Trophy team up to recognize our nation’s most esteemed high school Seniors. The culmination of this process takes place in December in conjunction with the National Heisman Memorial Trophy presentation during Heisman Weekend in New York City. It’s here where Wendy’s selects its National High School Heisman Winners during a broadcast on ESPN networks. This partnership ensures that high school winners enjoy the prestige of national recognition for their tremendous achievements.
